Growing up in South Africa, being in the bush and surrounded by the outdoors was simply part of life.
That is probably why Melvill & Moon feels so familiar to us.
The canvas, the leather, the practical details, and the sense that everything was made to go somewhere all speak to a way of traveling and being outdoors that I know well.
And this year, that connection became even more personal when we met Robert Melvill in Cape Town. We already had a relationship with the family, but meeting him gave us another reason to appreciate the people behind the things we carry at Hartford House.
So, is Melvill & Moon a good safari brand? For us, absolutely. But not just because the bags look right. It is the family, the history, the craftsmanship, and the sense of adventure behind them that make the brand feel genuine.
The Family Behind Melvill & Moon
Melvill & Moon is a family-owned South African business with roots in Africa stretching back eight generations. Across those generations, one thing comes through clearly: a love of Africa and a passion for safari.
We like knowing that the story was there long before the bags.
The outdoors is not simply something the brand has borrowed as an aesthetic. It is part of the world the family knows.
That matters to us.
We are naturally drawn to businesses where the objects make more sense once you know who created them, where they came from, and why they were made in the first place.
Meeting Robert made the connection feel even more personal. Now, when we talk about the bags, we are also talking about the family behind them.
A Safari Bag Has to Be Ready to Be Used
A safari bag can look wonderful sitting untouched in a photograph.
That is not really the point.
A good travel bag has to be picked up, packed, put down, lifted again, and taken somewhere. The handles need to make sense once there is weight inside. The opening needs to be practical. The materials should feel substantial without making you afraid to actually use them.
That practical attitude runs through Melvill & Moon bags.
The pieces we carry are handmade in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, using traditional techniques and robust materials. What we like is that they are made to be used, traveled with, and kept for years.
A good travel bag should be something you can actually use, without worrying every time you put it down.
Canvas, Leather and the Details That Do the Work
Look closely at Melvill & Moon and the materials tell much of the story.
Heavy cotton canvas forms the foundation of many of the designs. Leather is used alongside it, often in the places that are handled, pulled, fastened, or reinforced. Then there are the brass zippers and buckles, wide webbing, and strong straps.
What interests us is how all of those details work together.
Take the Catalina Duffel Bag, for example. It combines heavy-duty cotton canvas with oil-impregnated leather, solid brass YKK zippers, substantial buckles, and interior pockets.
Nothing feels added simply for effect.
For anyone comparing safari leather bags with canvas-and-leather styles, those working details matter just as much as the overall look.
You can see that approach throughout our Melvill & Moon collection.
The Stories Are Part of the Design
One of the things we enjoy most about Melvill & Moon is that some of the bags come with stories of their own.
The Catalina takes its name and inspiration from the flying-boat era of early long-distance air travel to Africa. Its generous proportions and old-world travel feel make a little more sense once you know where the idea came from.
That history gives the design context.
And that is more interesting to us than simply making something look “safari.”
The brand often looks to earlier travel and safari equipment for ideas, particularly the straightforward materials and purposeful construction of pieces designed to be used outdoors.
We do not need to recreate another era to appreciate that.
What we love is what Melvill & Moon has carried forward: sturdy canvas, beautiful leather, substantial hardware, and bags made with a purpose.
Why Melvill & Moon Belongs at Hartford House
Our connection to South Africa is part of the reason Melvill & Moon caught our attention in the first place.
I grew up there, John was born there, we were married there, and Hartford House itself takes its name from the place where we were married. We wrote more about that connection after our return to South Africa earlier this year.
But that alone would not be enough reason to bring a brand into the store.
We also have to love what they make, how they make it, and the people behind it.
With Melvill & Moon, those things came together naturally. We already had a relationship with the family, and meeting Robert in Cape Town this year made that connection even more personal.
Adventure is part of our DNA too. Perhaps that is why these bags have always made sense here.
Choosing a Bag for Your Kind of Adventure

Of course, your adventure does not need to involve a safari.
It might be a weekend away. A road trip. A day outdoors. A long-haul flight. Or simply the pleasure of taking one well-made bag instead of three things you do not really need.
Start with how you actually travel.
A duffel makes sense if you want something generous and easy to pack. A tote may be better if you want a piece that moves between travel and everyday life. And sometimes the most useful object is not luggage at all.
We have a particular weakness for the Kalahari Cooler, which combines outdoor practicality with the sort of visual character that makes you want to take it somewhere. Our collection currently includes Catalina bags, Safari duffels, Traveller's Totes, and the Kalahari Cooler.
Our version of safari might even involve Napa, a bottle of wine, and somewhere beautiful to sit.
The destination can change.
The pleasure of being ready to go somewhere does not.

Made for the Journey
Adventure does not have to mean the same thing to everyone.
For us, Melvill & Moon brings back something familiar: South Africa, being outdoors, and the feeling that the journey itself can be as memorable as where you eventually arrive.
But you do not need those same memories to appreciate a bag made with that spirit.
Pick one up. Feel the canvas and leather. Open the zippers. Look at where the straps attach and how the details have been put together.
If you are in St. Helena, come into Hartford House and tell us where you are headed. We are always happy to show you the collection and help you find the piece that makes sense for your kind of adventure.
If you are farther away, you can explore our Melvill & Moon collection online.
Because a good travel bag should do more than look ready for the journey.
It should make you want to take one.
