These handbags catch your eye from across a room, and they make you want to touch them, turn them over, and look at them more closely.
The leather may be what draws you in first. The distinctive quill of ostrich, the almost reptilian texture of ostrich leg, an unexpected color, or a sculptural handle. But look closer, and you begin to see the craftsmanship behind each piece.
Cape Cobra is a third-generation, family-owned leather house in Cape Town, South Africa, where handbags and accessories are still crafted by skilled artisans.
But there is something else we love about them.
These are luxury handbags that are unmistakably connected to where they come from.
How Did Cape Cobra Leathercraft Begin?
Cape Cobra’s story began with Lothar Schäfer, a German-trained leather artisan who settled in Cape Town with his wife, Denise. What started as a home workshop in 1972 grew into the Cape Cobra Leathercraft we know today.
More than fifty years later, the business remains within the family. Lothar’s granddaughter, Justine Schäfer, now leads Cape Cobra as CEO and Creative Director, carrying the family’s leathercraft tradition into its third generation.
The designs have evolved over the decades, but the values behind them remain the same: carefully chosen materials, skilled hands, and a belief that beautifully made things should be created to last.
What Makes Cape Cobra Bags Different?
Quite simply, the beauty of Cape Cobra comes from how much of the process remains in human hands.
Each handbag is designed, cut, stitched, lined, and finished at Cape Cobra’s atelier in Cape Town. The leather itself is part of the creative process, rather than simply a material used to create the bag.
No two ostrich skins, for example, have exactly the same markings. The placement of the quills varies naturally, so artisans carefully consider how each individual skin will work with the shape and proportions of a particular design.
That individuality is something we particularly love.
You can put two Cape Cobra handbags in the same style and color beside one another, and they still won't be quite the same.
Why Does Cape Cobra Use Ostrich Leather?

Ostrich is one of the leathers most closely associated with both Cape Cobra and South Africa.
Traditional ostrich leather has a naturally textured surface created by the marks left behind where the feathers once grew. It is tactile, soft to the touch, and known for its durability.
But Cape Cobra also works with ostrich leg leather, which has a completely different character. With its textured, almost scaled appearance, it brings another dimension to the handbags they create.
The story behind ostrich leg leather is especially interesting.
Lothar Schäfer saw potential in a part of the ostrich hide that had traditionally been discarded and pioneered its use in handbags. Where others saw waste, he saw an opportunity to create something distinctive.
That combination of respect for traditional leathercraft and curiosity about materials still feels central to Cape Cobra today.
How Does Cape Cobra Approach Responsible Leathercraft?
With specialty leathers, provenance matters.
Cape Cobra sources its ostrich and Nile crocodile leathers within South Africa, with exotic hides documented in accordance with CITES requirements. Keeping sourcing, tanning, and production within South Africa also helps support the specialist skills and leathercraft traditions behind each piece.
That same care extends to the materials themselves.
Smaller offcuts can become wallets, card holders, woven leather pieces, or patchwork designs, allowing parts of a hide that may not be used for a handbag to find another purpose.
Cape Cobra also trains artisans within the business, helping highly specialized leatherworking skills continue from one generation to the next.
Why Does Cape Cobra Feel So at Home at Hartford House?
This one is personal for us.
South Africa is where Helen grew up, where John was born, and where we were married more than twenty years ago. Hartford House itself takes its name from the place where we celebrated our wedding.
So when we find a South African maker creating something truly special, we naturally feel an extra little pull.
But our relationship with Cape Cobra has become more personal than that.
We have come to know Justine Schäfer and have seen firsthand how passionately she is carrying her family’s business into its third generation. In July 2026, she travelled from Cape Town to join us at Hartford House for a three-day Cape Cobra trunk show.
And this is where Cape Cobra became particularly fun.
Customers were not simply choosing handbags from a shelf. They could feel the different leathers, compare colors and finishes, explore swatches, and work with Justine to create something that felt uniquely theirs.
There were bags everywhere. Decisions changed. Colors were reconsidered. Handles were debated.
It was wonderful.
Because suddenly the person behind these pieces in Cape Town was sitting in our store in St. Helena, helping one of our customers create their own.
That is exactly the kind of connection we want Hartford House to make possible.
Our return to South Africa gave us the opportunity to reconnect with artisans and makers whose work we admire, including Cape Cobra. You can read more about that journey in our Return to South Africa story, or go back to Introducing Cape Cobra for the beginning of the collection at Hartford House.
What Should You Look for in a Cape Cobra Handbag?
Start with the one you keep reaching for.
Look closely at the leather, too. The natural quill pattern of ostrich, the scaled texture of ostrich leg, and the variations within each skin are part of what give every Cape Cobra handbag its own character.
Think about how you will actually use it. Perhaps it is a crossbody you can carry every day, a larger bag that becomes part of your routine, or a structured top-handle piece that feels almost as much like an object as it does a handbag.
And don't be afraid of color.
One of the things Cape Cobra does particularly well is create color with confidence, from understated neutrals to unexpected shades that completely transform a familiar silhouette.
Ultimately, we give the same advice we offer when choosing almost anything special at Hartford House:
Choose the one you would be disappointed to see someone else walk out with.

Discover Cape Cobra at Hartford House
Photographs show you the shape and color of a Cape Cobra bag. But, much like Ardmore, these are pieces that truly reveal themselves when you see them up close.
You notice the natural markings in the leather. The stitching. The lining. The hardware. The way the handle feels in your hand. And all the small decisions that reveal themselves when you realize this was not simply produced. Someone made it.
That distinction matters to us.
Hartford House was created around the idea of discovering beautiful objects and sharing the people and places behind them. Cape Cobra brings together so much of what we value: extraordinary craftsmanship, family history, individuality, beautiful materials, and a connection to South Africa that makes it especially close to our hearts.
If you're in St. Helena, we invite you to spend some time with the collection. Pick the bags up. Look closely. Try them on. We would be delighted to share what we know about the leathers, the makers, and perhaps a few stories about Justine too.
Because a Cape Cobra handbag is beautiful before you know its story.
But it becomes even more meaningful once you do.
You can also explore our Cape Cobra collection online or browse our wider selection of handbags and wallets.
The best pieces often become the ones you treasure most when you understand where they came from.
