Meet the Maker: Cape Cobra's Justine Schäfer

Cape Cobra Leathercraft has been a cornerstone of the Hartford House collection since we opened our doors just over a year ago, and we know that our customers have become as enamored with Cape Cobra's leather luxury goods as we are.

So we are over the moon to welcome Justine Schäfer, the third-generation leader and creative force behind this extraordinary South African company, to present a three-day Cape Cobra trunk show July 14-16 with an exclusive VIP reception the evening of July 15th. Justine will present Cape Cobra's latest designs, answer questions about the company's philosophy and sustainability initiatives, and even work with customers to design a custom-order handbag.

As Justine explains, "What sets Cape Cobra Leathercraft apart is its fully integrated leather value chain, based entirely in South Africa. From raw material sourcing to final product creation, every stage is executed locally. This not only guarantees exceptional quality and traceability, but also supports the local economy, preserves artisanal skills, and minimizes environmental impact."

Established in 1972 by Justine's grandparents, Lothar and Denise Schäfer, Cape Cobra soon became one of the leading luxury exotic leather handbags and accessories producers on the African continent. Through her family's guidance and that of the craftsmen around her, over time Justine worked her way up through the business, learning what it takes to design and produce extraordinary pieces with exquisite detail.

And the Spring/Summer 2026 Collection offers something special as well: it is inspired by and honors the legacy of Denise Schäfer, who turns 90 this year (Happy Birthday Denise!). Combining heritage styles and vibrant colors, this collection offers something special for every refined buyer to treasure for a lifetime.
