Return to South Africa

Return to South Africa

For those who have graced us with a visit to our St. Helena store, you likely learned how and why we came to carry such a wide range of gorgeous treasures from around the world, especially from South Africa. This is where I grew up, where John was born (before a childhood move to England), and where we eventually committed to a life together, holding our wedding in the rolling hills of KwaZulu-Natal more than twenty years ago.

Indeed, when we searched for a name for our new store, we chose Hartford House—the magical venue where we were married—to remind ourselves of everything that has brought us together and all we dream of sharing with others during this new chapter of our lives.

So, we are thrilled to announce that today we are returning to the country that inspired our vision. Over the next few weeks, we’ll travel throughout South Africa’s varied and stunning landscapes, reconnect with dear friends and master artisans at Ardmore, ArkPaper, Bardovano, Cape Cobra, and Melvill & Moon and meet with new purveyors and artists along the way.

We’ll also enjoy a bit of adventure, traveling to Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe, for the first time and revisiting the Kruger National Park for safari.

And we would love for you to join us…at least virtually!

Please follow along on Instagram (@HartfordHouseCollection) and Facebook  as we post updates, behind-the-scenes looks at artisan studios and shops, and of course photos of the incedible animals, gorgeous vistas, spectacular sunsets, and pristine beaches. Want to see something in particular? Post it online and let us know!

And you never know, maybe you will actually travel with us to South Africa someday. In this trip, John and I will also be laying the groundwork for making our next dream come true: leading curated, small-group trips to South Africa beyond the typical tourist paths. We want to introduce you to the artists we love, the landscapes that take our breath away, and the hospitality that ensures every visit is unforgettable. Contact me at Helen@HartfordHouse.com if this is something that interests you, and we will be sure to keep you apprised of our planning and dates. These are exciting days!

Meanwhile, thank you for being a part of our journey and supporting our vision. We will see you on the flip side of the equator!
